Here's what to expect when you visit a collection centre to have your blood drawn.
Before you go, make sure you have your referral (printed or on your phone) and your Medicare card if you have one. Check the centre's opening hours on our collection centre map and whether walk-ins are accepted or you need to book ahead.
When you arrive, present your referral at reception. The staff will check your details and direct you to a waiting area. Most visits don't take long, but wait times can vary depending on how busy the centre is.
During the blood draw, a trained phlebotomist will collect your sample. The process itself usually takes just a few minutes. If you've ever felt faint during blood draws, let the staff know beforehand so they can take extra care.
After the draw, you're free to go. If you fasted, now's a good time to eat something. Your sample will be sent to the laboratory for processing, and you'll receive a notification when your results are ready.
Most people are in and out within 15 to 30 minutes, including any wait time.
